What is the age of Sri Sathya Sai Baba ?

All the media is highlighting that Sri Sathya Sai Baba himself once told he would live upto 96 years of age and since he died at 85 years of age he went wrong in his prediction about his longevity. This 85 years is as per the western calendar and solar based.

One point i would like to mention here is that we Indians follow different systems of calculations as regards to the length of the year.

Solar Year - of 365.25 days ( Sam Vatsaram )
Lunar Year - 29*12 days ( Indha Vatsaram )
Stellar Year - 27*12 days ( Nakshatra Vatsaram )

Since the Ecliptic or the Zodiac is tenanted by 12 Signs of 30 degrees and 27 constellations or Nakshatras, one stellar or sidereal ( " pertaining to the stars ") month is 27 days and one Stellar Year is 12*27 = 324 days. This stellar month stems from Beta Arieties ( Aswini ) to Zeta Piscium ( Revathi ) and is of 27 days.

Hence if we calculate Sai's age, he was 96 when he left his body. He had lived 30, 834 days, from his birthdate from 23.11.1926 to 24.04.2011.30834/324 We get 95 years and 54 days and Sri Sai was in his 96th year !!!!.

Jupiter - Saturn Opposition - Sri Sathya Sai Baba's Demise

It was today announced that Sri Sai Baba passed away at 07.39 am after being hospitalised from 28th of March with critical illness caused by multi organ failure. It was very drastic to note that there was a Jupiter - Saturn opposition on 29th of March. It is just round the time he fell ill critically. From then nothing worked in favour of his devotees and his health continued to deteriorate.

If we observe the Jupiter - Saturn oppositions in this century ,we can observe that there were mass movements, assassinations of mass leaders, passing away of spiritual leaders and a change in the socio-political and economic systems and trends all over the Globe.

Here it is worth mentioning that the movement led by Mr.Anna Hazare to pass the Lokpal Bill in the Parliament has received support from one and all and turned out to be of enormous proportion cornering the Government to agree all his terms. This will definitely turn out to be beneficial to the people. The movement is the positive outcome of the Opposition under study.

It is to be noted that there were many rumours surrounding Baba's health condition and there were contradicting medical bulletins issued apart from the rumours that much of the wealth preserved in the Ashram was bungled out.

I believe that the retrogression of Mercury from  1 st April till 23 rd of April has caused the communication lapses/manipulations causing much agony to his devotees.

We would never know the truth as to what happened as all the monitoring systems are corrupt.

Another instance of this kind of celestial happening was of the opposition of Mars and Retrograde Saturn on 18th of April. This resulted in a Wild forest fire in Texas state at this same time. There were an increased number of fire accidents and vehicular accidents all over the Globe at the same time too.

The celestial dramas happening above in the skies have a definite say over each and everyone of us psychologically,Physically and in a nut shell are the reason for the physical existence and non existence of  us all.

Jupiter-The Great Fortune

Jupiter the mighty planet is called a giant of the solar system. It has a diameter of 88,000 miles. Jupiter takes a little less than twelve years to go once round the Sun. Mythologically, Jupiter is the preceptor of Gods. Old Greeks considered Jupiter as the father of Gods-Zeus. Egyptians call Mm Ammon. Jupiter is said to possess and offer 'Sathwaguna'. Our fortunes are governed by Jupiter who is the chief governor for money. Jupiter is termed as 'Greater Fortune' and is said to be hot moist, sanguine, temperate, social, expansive, masculine and moderate. He governs the blood, liver, veins, arteries and thighs. He rules higher education and signifies judges, councillors, bankers, brokers, theologians, philanthropists, also science, law, reason and comparison. He rules financial dealings, speculation, shipping business and foreign affairs. His day is Thursday, metal gold, colour yellow and gems yellow sapphire and Topaz. Typical Jupiterians are usually termed jovial owing to the fact that Jupiter gives such characteristics as socialiblity, hope, benevolence veneration, compassion, justice, honesty, spirituality, also well developed faculties of proportion, calculation and location. The Jupiterian is usually quick to hit the mark as his symbol is the Archer. In the business world, natives ruled by Jupiter become interested in large popular enterprises and deal much in matters related to lawyers, judges, bankers, brokers and physicians. Science and medicine, insurance and commercial travelling often engage their attention, also affairs of philanthropic, charitable and religious or benevolent import. Jupiter is called the 'Greater Fortune' because, unless he is ill placed in the horoscope, he bestows a considerable amount of what appears to be good luck upon natives who are suited for positions of dignity, trust or power in business and social circles. Having a logical, broad mind, considerable self possession, self confidence and determination, they usually inspire confidence and attain responsible positions. Jupiter is fiery, noble, benevolent, fruitful, jovial, optimistic, positive, and dignified planet. He is the greatest benefic. However, much other planets may be ill posited and threaten difficulties to a person, if Jupiter is strong and well placed in a chart, he will enjoy the providential help at least at the last moment to tide over the difficulties and get rid of evil. Jupiter also indicates how far one will respect the elders, preceptors and religious scriptures. Jupiter makes one law abiding, true, honest, sincere and dutiful. If Jupiter is afflicted in the horoscope, the native will be an extremist and unconventional. He will be extravagant and lavish. The other evil effects would be over optimism, false hopes, carelessness, debts, disputes, failure in speculation, gambling, worry through children, false prestige, loss of reputation, mis-judgment and miscalculation, etc. Jupiterians are well built and may have a huge belly. They will have good growth in youth, have muscular body and become so stout as to command respect from others. Jupiter is also considered as significator for children (Santan Karaka). Jupiter owns Sagittarius and Pisces. He is exalted in Cancer, the highest exaltation point being 5 degrees of Cancer. He is debilitated in Capricorn, the lowest debilitation being 5 degrees of Capricorn. First 5 degrees portion of Sagittarius is his Mūltrikona and the rest is hi'-' Swakshetra-The whole of Pisces is also his Swakshetra. The Sun, the Moon and Mars are friends of Jupiter. Mercury and Venus are his enemies Saturn is neutral to him.

Mercury in the Twelfth House -Comparision of Bhrigu Sutras with other texts

Mercury in the Twelfth House -Comparision of Bhrigu Sutras with other texts
Sutras 76-81-The native will be learned. He will be fond of distributing things to others. If Mercury is associated with malefics, the native will have an unstable mind and he will have bitterness towards the king. If Mercury is associated with benefics, the native will incur expenditure on religious charities and will have meager education.
Comments-The twelfth is a house of loss or expenditure (Vyaya Bhava). The only good that the benefic Mercury does is to make the native spend money on religious charities and distribute articles of necessity to the needy.
Other Views
Brihat Jataka-The person concerned will suffer degradation.
Phaldeepika-The person will be poor, lazy, cruel and without any education. He will also suffer humiliation.
Saravali-The person will be true to his words, lazy, humiliated, orator, poor and cruel.
Chamatkar Chintamani-The native will entertain Brahmins and create fear in the mind of enemies.
Note-Adverse results have been attributed to Mercury in the 12th house by the above authorities.

Mercury in the Eleventh House - Comparision of Bhrigu Sutras with other texts

Mercury in the Eleventh House - Comparision of Bhrigu Sutras with other texts
Sutras 71-75-If Mercury is in the eleventh house, the native will perform many auspicious ceremonies. He will acquire wealthy through many sources. After the age of 21 he will be blessed with children and will be wealthy and kind-hearted. If Mercury is in the house of a malefic or is associated with malefics, the native will suffer loss of wealth on account of sinful deeds. If Mercury is in his own sign or in his sign of exaltation, the native will become wealthy by performing virtuous deeds.
Comments-The above Sutras have attributed very benefic results to Mercury in the eleventh house if he is not under any malefic influence. For Leo Ascendant if Mercury is in the 11th house he will be there as lord of the 2nd and 11th houses in the 11th. This will be a very good disposition for making the native very wealthy. For Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Pisces ascendants also Mercury in the 11th will be very beneficial.
Other Views
Brihat Jataka-Mercury in the 11th house will make the person born wealthy.
Phaldeepika-The native will be long-lived, true to his words, possessor of enormous wealth and happy. He will enjoy happiness and comforts from his servants.
Saravali-The native will be wealthy, learned, happy, fond of things of luxury and famous, and will have obedient servants.
Chamatkar Chintamani-There will be no gain of wealth unless Mercury is in the eleventh house.
Note-All the above authorities and Bhrigu Sutras are in full agreement that eleventh house is a very auspicious and favourable house for Mercury.

Mercury in the Tenth House -Comparision of Bhrigu Sutras with other texts

Mercury in the Tenth House -Comparision of Bhrigu Sutras with other texts
Sutras 67-70-If Mercury is in the tenth house the native will be successful by performing virtuous deeds. He will be patient, will have wide spread reputation and will be a great thinker. In his 28th year he will suffer from eye troubles. If Mercury is in his own sign or in his sign of exaltation or is in conjunction with Jupiter, the native will perform many kinds of religious rites. If Mercury is in the house of his enemy, or is associated with a malefic, the native will be stupid, will indulge in sinful deeds and will be of bad conduct.
Comments-The above Sutras have ascribed beneficial results to Mercury in the tenth house unless he is under malefic influence. However, the statement in Sutra 68, that the native will suffer from eye troubles in his 28th year does not appear logical and relevant to the significations of Mercury and the tenth house. If Mercury is in the 10th house in his own sign Gemini he will be there as lord of the ascendant and the tenth in the 10th house. If he is in his own sign Virgo (this is also his sign of exaltation) he will be there as lord of seventh and tenth in .the tenth house. These are very favourable dispositions. Lord of 10th in the 10th or lord of 9th in 10th (Capricorn ascendant) also forms a powerful Raja yoga which is capable of giving the native great name, fame and popularity.
Mercury in the tenth in his own sign or in his sign of exaltation, being in Kendra to the ascendant, will also give rise to Bhadra yoga, the effects of which have already been described earlier in this chapter.
If Mercury as a benefic occupies the tenth house from the ascendant Amia yoga is also formed, the results of which have been given as under:-
"The person will achieve lasting fame and reputation. His character will be spotless and he will lead a prosperous life."
For Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants, Mercury in the tenth as lord of the ascendant and 4th, as lord of the ascendant and the 10th, as lord of 7th and the 10th, as lord of the 4th and 7th respectively will give rise to powerful Dhan yogas.
Other Views
Brihat Jataka-The person concerned will be happy and powerful.
Phaldeepika-The native will be learned, powerful, intelligent, happy, will perform virtuous deeds and will be successful in his life.
Saravali-The native will be highly intelligent, will perform virtuous deeds, will be successful in his life, will be educated, tolerant and powerful. He will be decorated with many honours.
Chamatkar Chintamani-The native will get paternal property. He will be respected everywhere. He will have the authority of a king. He will speak less and do more
Note-All the above are agreed that the position of a benefic Mercury in the 10th would be one of the most favourable dispositions in a horoscope.

Mercury in the Ninth House - Comparision of Bhrigu Sutras with other texts

Mercury in the Ninth House - Comparision of Bhrigu Sutras with other texts
Sutras 64-66-If Mercury is in the 9th house the native will have many children. He will be learned in Vedas and Shastras, fond of music, very patient, religious minded, full of glory, wealthy and fortunate and his father will be long-lived. He will be well cultured and will take interest in meditation.
Comments-The above Sutras have clearly established that the placement of Mercury in the ninth is very beneficial to the native and will give long life to his father. The views expressed are logical and relevant to the significations of the 9th house. For Taurus ascendant Mercury will be in the 9th as lord of the 2nd and 5th. For Gemini ascendant Mercury will be in the 9th as lord of ascendant and the 4th. For Leo ascendant, he will be in the 9th as the lord of the 2nd and llth. For Virgo ascendant he will be in the 9th as lord of ascendant and 10th. For Libra ascendant he will be in 9th as lord of 9th. For Sagittarius ascendant he will be in the 9th as lord of the 7th and 10th. For Pisces ascendant he will be in the 9th as lord of the 4th and 7th. These are powerful Dhana yogas. If Mercury is in his own sign (Gemini or Virgo) a very powerful Raja yoga will be formed giving name, fame and wealth to the native.
Other Views
Brihat Jataka-The person concerned will be endowed with children, wealth and happiness.
Phaldeepika-The native will be very learned, religious minded wealthy and of good conduct.
Saravali-The native will be very wealthy, very learned, of good conduct, orator, proficient in his work and religious minded.
Chamatkar Chintamani-The native will be religious minded and very wise. He will perform religious rites, bathe in the Ganges, bring good reputation to his family and will destroy those who indulge in sinful deeds.
Note-All the above authorities agree with the Bhrigu Sutras about the beneficial effects of Mercury in the 9th house.

Mercury in the Eighth House

Mercury in the Eighth House

Bhrigu Sutras 57-63-If Mercury is in the 8th house, the native will get a good span of life and will be owner of a large area of land. He will have seven children. In his 25th year he will receive respect and honour in many ways and will get wide spread fame and reputation. If the lord of the 8th is strong or if the lord of the 8th is in his sign of exaltation (Virgo) and associated with benefic the native will be assured of full span -of life. If the lord of the 8th is in his sign of debilitation (Pisces) and is associated with malefics, the native will have a short life.
Comments-The above Sutras speak very well of Mercury in 8th house. The native will get lands and good reputation and also longevity. The Sutras do not mention of wealth. In our view Mercury-will aspect the 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) from the 8th and therefore the native should be wealthy also. According to Sutra 58 the native will have seven children. At the time of giving effects of Mercury in 5th house (house of children Suta Bhava), it was said in Sutra 38 that Mercury in 5th would create obstacles in getting the native children. It, there fore becomes difficult to believe that the same Mercury in the 8th house (an evil house) will give the native seven children particularly when this house has got nothing to do with children.

Other Views

Brihat Jataka-The person concerned will be widely known for his qualities.

Phaldeepika-The native will be a person who will have authority to award punishment (judge, magistrate etc). He will have wide spread reputation and will be long-lived. He will be a supporter of his family and will be full of good qualities.

Saravali-The native will be famous, full of glory, powerful, longlived and supporter of his family. He will be like a king or a judge.

Chamatkar Chintamani-The native will live for one hundred years. He will enjoy good reputation not only in his own country but in foreign countries also. He will acquire wealth by favour of the king or by doing business. He will enjoy the company of women.

Note-All the authorities are in full agreement with Bhrigu Sutras that the-position of Mercury should be considered as very favourable in the 8th house but as pointed out by Bhrigu Sutras the disposition of the lord of the 8th should also be kept in view. It should also be remembered that as mentioned in chapter three (while dealing with the position of Mars in the sixth house) that if Mercury is in 8th house (a dusthana) as lord of an auspicious house, he will adversely affect the significations of that house but as lord of 2nd in the 8th he will not prove harmful because then he will be aspecting his own house from the 8th house.

Why there are 108 Rudrakshas in the Japa Mala

Three facts that any book on astronomy will verify:
* Distance between earth and sun = 108 times sun-diameter,
* Distance between earth and moon = 108 times moon-diameter, and most remarkably,
* Diameter of the sun = 108 times the earth diameter.

We can understand that the 108 beads of the rosary (japamala) must map the steps between the body and the inner sun. The devotee, while saying beads, is making a symbolic journey from the physical body to the heavens.

The 9 th House

धर्मं भाग्यामधो स्यालम भ्रात्रुपत्न्यादिकम  स्थाधा !
थिर्थयात्रदिकाम्सर्वं धर्मास्थानान्निरीक्षयेत !

In the above sloka on the Dharma sthana or the 9 th house Maharshi Parashara says the matters that are to be seen from the house.

He says 9th house has to be seen for the righteousness of the native along with luck, wife of brother, and piligrimage.

It is our practice that we see for father from the 9th house. But parasara says it is the 10th house from which father has to be seen in the horoscope.

9th  house is considered the most beneficial house being the most powerful of the trines (Konas) namely 1st,5th and 9th.

On a study of some other authors we can conclude, the house signifies Luck, divine grace, wisdom one's spiritual path, religion, philosophy, teachers and gurus, progress and travel in a broader sense.

Some more observations:

Lagna lord in 9th house denotes that the native will settle in a foreign country for a beneficial living.

The lord of the 9th house if associated with the 10th lord or house, results in a very powerful rajayoga If none of them have afflictions.

The 9th house denotes purva punya which is carried over into the current life.

The house is also one of the apoklimas which means it is a mutable(changeable) house.Being classified as a mutable house it comes under a weak category of houses. As 9th house is the 12th from 10th house it denotes breaks in one's profession.

Ashtakavarga - An unique tool

न सक्त्नोती पुनः किम वा मनुजा मंदाबुधाय :
विसेशिता: कलियुगे सरलो यम न निश्चय:

In the above sloka,Parasara says it is difficult for the people of kaliyuga who are of  a lesser cognitive capalibility to understand the principles of astrology he said in his sastram .He himself proposed a shortcut method to apply the principles of astrology by giving us the system of predictions in Ashtaka Vargaadhyaa.

Ashtakavarga System of prediction is an unique priceless tool propounded by Parasara Maharshi in his Parasara Hora sastram and is widely applicable for timing of events and having an exact overview of the life of any native who's horoscope is in question. In this post, i like to discuss on how to have an overview of the life of the native and save the discussion on the timing of events for another post.

He proposes that every planet in the horoscope of the native in question is a reference point and gives the benefic houses from each of such reference points.

In this method we can get to know the strengths of each planet and strengths of each bhava. Each planet can give a maximum of 8 benefic points and seven planets and treating lagna also as a planet as per parasara, can give a maximum of 64 points to each bhava.

The Bhava having more than 40 benefic points results in giving excellent results. The bhava having more than 35 points is good and the one having more than 30 points is average in giving the results. If the Benefic points is less than 30 then it results in struggles for the bhava in focus.

For example: If the 10 th house of profession has more than 40 points and the 5 th house of power and intelligence has 30 points then we have to deduce that the native will have a stable career and will be in a  supervisory role.

The strengths of each bhava gives the exact nature of the results the native is going to derive.

Examples:
1.If the native has 25 points in the 7th bhava then it is definite that he might face problems with his partners and spouse. If the native starts a partnership business then it is for sure that either he will be having trouble with his partners or he will be dominated by his partners resulting in dissatisfaction.

2.If the native has 40 points in his 8 th house he will be definitely deriving benefits from insurance companies, will be having  a rich spouse comparatively ,a long life, very good intuition and will not have any unexpected troubles all through his life.

The results of each bhava can be thus derived.

The Four Kinds of Karma

The Four Kinds of Karma

Our karma makes up both our fate and our free will because there are four kinds of karma – two that represent our fate and two that represent our free will. The two kinds of karma that represent our fate are:
1. Sanchita Karma – Our entire accumulated karma that represents all the actions we’ve performed in all our past our lifetimes.
2. Prarabdha Karma – Our current life karma. Our prarabdha karma is that portion of our entire sanchita karma that is allotted to us to experience in our current lives.
The two kinds of karma that represent our free will are:
3. Kriyamana Karma – This is our free will to take current actions to change our current life situation.
4. Agama Karma – This is our free will to make a plan or set an intention to take an action in the future.
To use our free will effectively we have to “plan our work” and “work our plan”. The former is our agama karma, while the latter is our kriyamana karma. Without kriyamana and agama karma our life would be entirely predestined at the moment of birth. We would, in effect, be automatons at the mercy of our past karma.

The Law of Karma

The Law of Karma

Our astrology chart is a map of our “karma”. Karma basically means “action”. When we talk about “our karma” we’re talking about the actions we’ve “sown” or performed in the past (including our past lives) that are the cause of what we “reap” in our current life situation. This either becomes our karmic burden or our karmic blessing depending on whether we’ve performed positive or negative actions in the past. The Vedic scripture, the Mahabharata, says that just as a calf can always find its mother, even if its wandered into a large herd, so our past karma will always seek us out and find us. This is the law of karma.
However, our astrology chart is a relatively flexible map because our karma is relatively flexible – meaning that some karma in our lives is fixed or fated and some karma is flexible and can be changed by our free will. Our lives, then, are a dynamic interrelationship between both fate and free will.

Quote on Karma and Freewill - Sri Yukteswar Giri

"A child is born on that day and at that hour when the celestial rays are in mathematical harmony with one's individual karma. His horoscope is a challenging portrait, revealing his unalterable past and it's probable future results…The message boldly blazoned across the heavens at the moment of birth is not meant to emphasize fate – the result of past good and evil - but to arouse man's will to escape from his universal thralldom. What he has done he can undo. None other than himself was the instigator of the causes of whatever effects are now prevalent in his life. He can overcome any limitation, because he created it by his own actions in the first place and because he possesses spiritual resources that are not subject to planetary pressure."

– Swami Sri Yukteswar (guru of Paramahansa Yogananda, author of
Autobiography of a Yogi)
